Michael Lapsley was born in New Zealand and was trained as a priest in
Australia before moving to South Africa where he worked as an African
National Congress chaplain during the apartheid years in South Africa. He
was exiled to Zimbabwe where, in 1990, he opened a letter bomb and lost
both his hands and one eye in the subsequent explosion.
Fr. Michael worked for the Trauma Center for Victims of Violence and
Torture in Cape Town, which assisted the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission. He started the Institute for Healing of Memories in 1998 and
currently serves as its director.
Fr. Michael has become a well-known international advocate for
reconciliation, forgiveness and restorative justice. He was invited to
speak to the 9/11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows as well as to the
organizers of the Oklahoma City bombing 10th anniversary observance. He
has conducted workshops around reconciliation and healing in the United
States, Australia, Britain, Ireland, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
His workshops have extended beyond their initial focus of healing
apartheid wounds and participants now include victims of domestic abuse,
refugees, prison inmates, and AIDS victims. Fr. Michael is in Minnesota to meet with Veterans and their families and will lead a Healing of Memories workshop for veterans in the fall.
