Millennium Development Goals

One billion people live on less than $1.00 a day--that's roughly one out of every six people on the planet! Could you? Probably not! Is anybody doing anything to eradicate poverty and make the world a better place? The answer is yes!

At the start of the new millennium, leaders from 191 nations--including the United States-- agreed on a plan to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015. Together, they created the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Development is about freedom from misery and suffering, hunger, illiteracy, disease, poor housing and insecurity.

Fulfilling the eight MDGs would mean lifting more than 500 million people out of extreme poverty. More than 300 million would no longer suffer from hunger. Child health would improve, saving the lives of more than 30 million children under the age of five. Sound too good to be true? You might not believe it, but these eight goals are attainable with the resources we have at our disposal today.

Never heard of the MDGs? You're not alone. But you're taking the first step by learning more. We have the power to help our brothers and sisters around the world--all we have to do is LEARN, PRAY, ACT, and GIVE.
